General Information about Rare Earth Magnets

Neodymium magnets are a type of rare earth magnet. But they are not the same as rare earth magnets. There are different types of rare earth magnets and Neodymium magnets are just one type. Neodymium magnets are the strongest permanent magnets available today and the most widely used type of rare earth magnets. Neodymium magnets are also known as Neodymium-Iron-Boron or Nd-Fe-B or NIB or Neo super magnets since they are made from an alloy of Neodymium, Iron, and Boron (NdFeB) with the Nd2Fe14B tetragonal crystalline structure. These magnets are extremely strong for their small size and are metallic in appearance.

Neodymium magnets are the strongest type of permanent magnet and have replaced other types of magnets in many applications in modern products that require strong permanent magnets, such as motors in cordless tools, hard disk drives, and magnetic fasteners.

NdFeB magnets are available in sintered as well as bonded forms. The bonded form of the material can be produced with close tolerances off tool, with little or no finishing required. The energy product of the bonded form is much lower than that of the sintered form - up to 10 MGOe. The sintered form usually requires some finishing operations in order to hold close mechanical tolerances.

NdFeB magnets are brittle (though not as brittle as the SmCo types), and machining operations should be performed prior to magnetization, using diamond tools. All NdFeB magnets, except the bonded NdFeB B10N material, are anisotropic, and can only be magnetized in the orientation direction. B10N material is isotropic and can be magnetized in any direction, and with multiple poles, although special magnetizing fixtures are required for this. In general, magnetizing fields of about 30 KOe are required to saturate NdFeB magnets.

Rare Earth magnets (Neodymium Magnets) are up to 7 times stronger than Ferrites (Ceramic) and offer excellent size to strength ratio with good temperature stability.
